The industrial fabric of East Berlin has undergone countless transformations since the fall of the wall. What were once bustling manufacturing plants and warehouses became illegal techno clubs in the 90s, and later, coveted real estate for tech startups. Today, a new movement is reclaiming these spaces for residential living, prioritizing the preservation of their gritty, historical essence.

Honoring the Industrial Heritage

Rather than plastering over the scars of the past, architects are leaving exposed brickwork, original steel beams, and even factory markings completely intact. The design philosophy is one of addition rather than subtraction: inserting modern comforts—like underfloor heating and high-spec kitchens—as floating elements that never quite touch the historical shell.
